During the summer of 2004, I took two drawing courses and a 3D art course. This was the beginning of my third year in college, and I felt that in those three months, I had learned more than I had from any of my other college non-art courses in two years. I had to think every day for several hours at a time about what I thought was art, what was appealing to me, how I would go about making that, what materials I liked to work with, and how I could improve.

I found that I enjoy drawing with materials that allow me to be imprecise, loose, and to show a lot of movement. Crayons, ink, charcoal, and chalk pastels are my favorites to work with. I especially enjoy drawing with chalk pastels, then using a wet brush to smear around much like water colors. This allows me to obtain solid tones along with expressive marks.
Bold colors are also important. I tend to draw with black and one or two other colors. Limiting the amount of colors seems to make the ones present more powerfull and able to suggest a feeling or meaning more effectively.
I am not attempting to suggest any specific meanings with my art. My goal is more to illustrate a non-specific feeling and in general, to make something engaging to look at.

Making art in three dimensions was a challenging new way to work, and I found that a lot of my ideas on color and visual movement applied in 3D space as well as on 2D mediums.
